Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The game that launched the Nintendo 64 system stands the test of time as one of the first and best exploratory action/adventure games. Guide the legendary plumber through an incredibly vast magical world with never-before-seen movement and camera-angle freedom. Mario's got the moves with graduated speeds of running and walking, jumps, super jumps, bounce attacks, swimming, and more. The more you play, the more moves you'll discover.

This industry milestone game lets gamers play at their own pace, encouraging them to explore new nooks and crannies of its many levels with a Zen-like approach where the journey is as important as the goal. Other N64 games such as Zelda, Banjo-Kazooie, and Donkey Kong 64 all owe much of their inspiration to this gem of a game. A showcase for the system's graphics and processing speed capabilities, Super Mario 64 is a must-have for any N64 owner. --Jeff Young

Pros:

  • Huge world makes for enduring game experience
  • Plenty of room for replay
  • State-of-the-art graphics for its time
  • Imaginative levels keep you guessing, and helpful characters act as an in-game tutorial
Cons:
  • First-generation game doesn't feature as much texture or detail in graphics

Manufacturer's Description

It's up to you to assist Mario as he restores peace at Mushroom Castle. Bowser is up to no good again, stealing the Power Stars that shield the castle. Bob-ombs live inside the paintings decorating the castle and Bowser has invaded them. Mario will have to enter the painting world, retrieve the Power Stars and halt Bowser before he turns the Bob-ombs into a monster militia. This one-player game for the Nintendo 64 raises the bar for video game excitement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Mario Game On Planet Earth! 10th Birthday March 2007!, 31 Jan 2006
By Mrs. Dawnc Alexandre "morning623" (Jersey (CI)) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In the United Kingdom this game was released on the 1st March 1997! But it wasn't until December 2000 when I was given my very own Nintendo 64 and Super Mario 64 game for Christmas!

I knew off by heart that this would be a very good quality game, and as soon as I turned the power on with the three sided controller, the voice of our legendary plumber "It'sa Me, Mario!" and his faced popped on screen made my eyes sparkle with joy and laughter!

Back in those days I couldn't even complete the first mission without team work from my brothers and friends! I loved this game from Day 1, and this is one thing I can thank my mum for giving birth to me for! I may be at adult age now, but I just adore the Nintendo 64 graphical quality, the sound effects and going forth in gameplay.

I could just pop on the legendary Wing Cap and just fly around the palaces, mountains and hills for hours knowning well that the music which goes with the cap is superior.

Now on this very day in 2006 I am still going back and forth on my old Nintendo 64, more or less, having quick fiddles on this Number 1 Mario game of all time as well as Mario Party 1 and a few others!

I have journeyed throughout the World Wide Web and discovered that this Mario game is known to be one of Shiggy's best ever Mario games on planet Earth to date, and that is a fact!!!

When it comes to Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64) VS Super Mario Sunshine (Gamecube), Super Mario 64 outsmarts Super Mario Sunshine with the full blast. Perhaps if the Wing Cap, Vanish Cap and Metal Caps were in Super Mario Sunshine as well, maybe Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine could have a different story!

Don't forget in March 2007 that this Number 1 game will be having it's 10th Birthday!

My Personal Game Score: 10/10 - Fantastic, Brilliant, Superb!

My Wish: My wish is to see Shiggy releasing this Nintendo 64 Classic game (Super Mario 64) on the Nintendo Gamecube or another console, just as it is! No remakes, no fiddles, just as it is!! Or even a Cartridge Amplifier, so I can play Super Mario 64 using a Gamecube controller and Memory Card!

Final Comment: My final comment is short and simple: If you have a child whom wants to enter the classical world of Video-Gaming and wants to see what children had back in the old days, treat him or her by buying a Nintendo 64 and getting a copy of Super Mario 64! This game will have your child playing with the legendary plumber for hours on end and it will be one fantastic thing that could happen to them in their live as well as the game being rememorble and antique in the future!!!!!

BUY IT AND PLAY IT ONE MORE TIME TODAY!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Others try, but never succeed. The best video game ever?, 23 Jul 2006

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I can still look back and smile now, at when I used to play Super Mario 64. It is, without a doubt, one of the best games ever. But why?
Quite simply, it has the imagination that newer games don't have. Technology based plots and complicated controls have ruined video games, and Super Mario contrasts them completey. Simplicity is given a new defintion to the controls in the game (jump, dive, triple jump and punch - the basics!) and the graphics are, quite literally, beautiful.
Its the game that had me and my friends amazed over, and a generation of youngsters actually proud to own an N64 after the school yard fights would continue over "which console was better".
Your not a gamer till you've played Super Mario 64.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Landmark in Platform Games, 16 May 2005
By Chris C "manxdude87" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
It has been over a year or two since i've played on this game, practically i sold it in the end, but looking back it was easily my favourite and to this day i still appreciate the legacy it has left.

The plot was basically like any other Mario game, Princess Peach has been kidnapped by Bowser and is hidden inside one of the paintings in the castle. You can only reach by collecting stars (120 in total, 70 to reach the finale)and defeating the evil Bowser.

Graphics-wise now it seems lame compared the quality we have now, but back then it was splendid, and Mario himself was an instantly likeable character, he ran, he jumped, he spoke with a funny italian accent and above all he was really cute.

What makes it so revolutionary was the gameplay, you got to meet various characters, you went through levels such as haunted houses, deserts and islands in the sky. You could collect different types of power-ups enabling you to fly, become invisible and metallic, it was a joy to play.

Super Mario 64 may be way past its prime now, but one cannot state enough the legacy it has left on the gaming world, cause as far was platform games go, this is made of the stuff only dreams are made of.
